What to Know Before Starting Therapy in Philadelphia

Starting therapy often comes with questions, and we want the process to feel as clear and supportive as possible. If you’re looking for therapy in Philadelphia or virtual therapy in Pennsylvania or Virginia, this page will walk you through what to expect—from using insurance to scheduling your first session.

You’ll find information about insurance, billing, confidentiality, and appointment availability—all in one place. And if you need anything beyond what’s here, we’re always happy to help.

Do You Accept Insurance for Therapy in Philadelphia?

Yes. Our clinicians are in-network with most major insurance providers, and we can submit claims on your behalf as a courtesy.

Because insurance plans vary, we strongly encourage checking your mental health benefits in advance so you know what to expect. We’re also happy to help you understand your coverage and answer any questions before you begin.

How Does Insurance Billing Work for Therapy?

Your insurance company determines:

  • Whether your therapy sessions are covered

  • How much is applied to your deductible

  • Your copay or coinsurance amount

If a claim is denied, we will follow up to better understand the reason and, when appropriate, submit an appeal on your behalf.

While we are happy to support you through this process, if a claim continues to be denied, the remaining balance becomes your responsibility.

What Should I Know About Using Insurance for Therapy?

Using insurance can significantly reduce your out-of-pocket costs, but every plan is different. Before starting therapy, it can be helpful to check in with your insurance provider and ask:

  • Do I have a deductible, and how much of it is remaining?

  • What is my copay or coinsurance for outpatient therapy?

  • Do I need pre-authorization?

  • Is virtual therapy covered?

If you’re unsure how insurance works or how it compares to self-pay, you can also learn more on our page about using insurance vs. private pay for therapy.

Reviewing this information ahead of time can help minimize the chance of unexpected costs later on. We’re also happy to walk through this with you.

How Does EAP (Employee Assistance Program) Coverage Work?

If your employer offers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), you may be eligible for a set number of sessions at no cost to you.

Before scheduling, you’ll need to obtain an authorization number from your EAP provider and share it with our team.

We will bill your sessions through your EAP until your authorized visits are used. After that, we can continue therapy using your insurance benefits or a self-pay option.

If an EAP claim is denied, we will bill your primary insurance. If that claim is also denied—or if you do not have insurance—you will be responsible for the session fee.

How Long Is a Therapy Session?

Standard therapy sessions are 45–53 minutes. Your initial session may take up to 60 minutes to allow time for a more thorough understanding of your needs and goals.

Is Therapy Confidential?

Yes. Therapy is confidential, and we take your privacy seriously.

There are a few exceptions required by law:

  • If a child is in danger

  • If you are at risk of harming yourself

  • If you are planning to harm someone else

If you have questions about confidentiality or privacy, we’re happy to talk through them with you.

What Is Your Cancellation Policy?

We require 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment.

Appointments canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice may be charged the full session fee. Insurance does not cover cancellation fees.

Do You Offer Virtual Therapy?

Yes. We provide secure, HIPAA-compliant virtual therapy for clients located in Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Virtual therapy allows you to access care from home while maintaining the same level of privacy and clinical quality as in-person sessions.

Do You Provide Documentation for Out-of-Network Benefits?

Yes. If you’re working with a clinician who is out-of-network with your insurance, we can provide a superbill upon request. You can submit this to your insurance company to request reimbursement, depending on your plan’s out-of-network benefits.

When Are Appointments Available?

Availability varies by clinician and is updated regularly.

Most of our therapists offer a mix of daytime and evening appointments, and new openings are added as schedules shift.

You can view current availability and request an appointment directly through our online client portal.

If you’re not sure which therapist is the best fit, you can submit a match request, and we’ll help connect you with the right clinician.
